Always a cracker when we line out against our old rivals St Ultans. The girls started well with the benefit of a so-called wind… although I’m sure the forwards would strongly argue that the wind was less of a helpful teammate and more like an opponent in disguise during the first half 🌬️.
First-half goals from Paula Dorian, Laura Dempsey and Claudia Durkan gave the girls a solid lead at the break, going in 3-3 to 0-4 ahead.
At the back, the full-back line of Hannah Kealey, Aideen Guy and Niamh Purcell continued to build on last week’s performance, leaving Ultans working overtime just to get a look at the posts. Behind them, the ever-reliable Edel Guy provided guidance from the goal along with a few inspirational kick outs that would make any coach nod approvingly from the sideline.
The half-back line featured Sarah Bagnall (very welcome back from injury), Nicole Troy (speedy and solid as a rock at number 6) and Kate McEvoy, who all worked tirelessly to move the ball up the pitch — probably covering enough ground to justify an extra recovery tea.
In midfield, the dynamic duo — the partnership you never knew you needed in your life — Susan Kealey and Emma Troy were up and down the pitch all evening (seriously, someone check their step counters).
Up front, the girls were flying, with nearly all forwards getting their names on the scoreboard.
A 15 minute purple patch in the second half (possibly helped by a stern but loving chat from the lads at half time) saw the ladies go out and score 1-4 without reply. Interestingly, the scoring seemed to improve against the wind and up the hill, which only further proves that the wind earlier was clearly not on our side.
Final score:
Boardsmill 4-9
St Ultans 1-7
A great whole-panel performance and well done to the subs who came on — especially Laura Bagnall and Hayley Kennedy, who returned to the field despite having newborns at home. Playing a match is impressive… doing it after sleepless nights is next-level dedication 👶💪
Scorers:
L Dempsey (1-6), Claudia Durkan (2-0), P Dorian (1-1), A Troy (0-1), E Troy (0-1)
Next up the Div 2 girls take on St Pats next week, while our Division 7 team are out Sunday evening against Skryne. Best of luck to all! 🔵⚪
